SKIRCHO, Stellis, and Canderoh huddled in the King’s antechamber, debating who would relate the news of the Hero’s recent exploits to Varic. Their nervous whispers echoed in the large room.

“You’re oldest,” Skircho told Stellis.

“But Varic likes him the best,” Stellis reminded Skircho, pointing at Canderoh.

“My bladder can’t take it,” Canderoh whimpered to the other two. “He’s already on edge from this whole Zombie situation.” More nervous whispering ensued as the advisors worried over the news they had to impart to their King. Early that morning, a messenger had arrived from the north, bringing word of the Hero’s current whereabouts.

Varic stormed out of his bedchamber, the door slamming against the stone of the castle wall. Canderoh was right; his bladder couldn’t take it, and the young steward dashed into the hallway clutching his gown as a wet spot spread beneath his hands.

“What the hell was that?” Varic roared at his remaining assistants. Skircho and Stellis looked to one another, hoping for advice. They shrugged simultaneously.

“He’s skittish,” Stellis offered.

“He has a weak bladder,” Skircho added.

Varic waved away the explanations. He strode across his antechamber to his sideboard and poured himself a cup of water, drained it, and replaced the cup. “What news?” he asked Stellis. The old steward’s eyes bulged on either side of his beaky nose. Stellis opened and closed his mouth silently.

“The Hero.” Skircho spoke up in an attempt to rescue his comrade from startled muteness. “We’ve had word of his progress.”

“Or lack thereof,” Stellis blurted. He clapped his hands over his mouth when he realized what he’d said. Skircho’s mouth dropped open.

Varic raised one finely sculpted brow as he regarded the two men. “Explain,” the King ordered.

They did, the words spilling out in an overlapping flood that Varic found undecipherable.

“Enough,” the King leveled a finger at Skircho. “You. Just you. Explain.”

The King’s favorite steward gulped and began to slowly explain the Hero and his Party’s recent encounters, their brush with death, subsequent resurrection, and their resulting search for a Healer. “They’re traveling away from the Zombie Emperium?” King Varic asked.

“To find a Healer, Your Majesty,” Stellis pointed out. “It’s our fault, really.” Varic and Skircho were both shocked by his revelation.

“How so?” they asked in unison.

“Well,” Stellis continued, “we were the ones who put together the list of possible candidates for the Hero’s Party. It was Skircho, Canderoh, and I who neglected to include a Healer on that list. It was a grievous oversight, and the Hero is just rectifying our mistake.”

Skircho slapped his forehead. “How could we forget a Healer?” he asked his fellow steward.

“It’s all the stories, isn’t it?” Stellis explained. “We hear all the stories of the amazing exploits of the Great Heroes, and we think they’re invincible.”

“But they aren’t,” the King interjected with a deep sigh. “They’re just men like us.” The stewards nodded. “Well, it can’t be helped now.” The King pinched the bridge of his nose, sensing a headache looming behind his eyes. “They have their Healer, though gods willing, they won’t need such assistance.
